Breast lifting associated or not with breast reduction
Breast lifting refers to the reshaping and repositioning of the mammary gland (including areola) in order to improve the shape of the breast.
Breast reduction, if necessary, can be done along with the breast lift and involves a reduction in the glandular mass in order to reduce the weight of the breast. The removed parts of the mammary gland are always histologically tested for possible abnormalities.
This type of interventions have both cosmetic and therapeutic role. Sagging breasts can lead to dermatological problems (because of the contact between the skin of the breast and that of the torso). The hypertrophic breasts (very heavy) can also cause breathing and posture problems.
In the case of breast cysts ("lumpy breasts") the removal of the cystic gland can be done along with the reshaping of the breast following the same esthetic principles.
After this type of intervention, the breast will have a normal weight and position and a better looking aspect. Irrespective of the method used, the final scar will have three components: a scar around the areola, a 6-8 cm scar from the inferior pole of the areola down to the infra-mammary fold and one in the infra-mammary fold. Of these three, the scar in the infra-mammary fold can be smaller (2-6cm) depending on the type of surgical incision and the initial size of the breast. These types of scars will fade within 6 months to 2 years after the surgery.
This surgery will take around 4 hours and must be done under general anesthesia.
Hospital stay: between 1-3 days.
Social activities can be resumed in 3-4 days.
Professional activities can be resumed in 7-10 days.
Following the surgery :
-the first dressing will be done the morning after the surgery
-the drainage tubes will remain for 1-3 days
-during the next 2 weeks the dressing will be changed a total of 3-4 times
-the stitches will be removed after 14 days
-a cotton bra without underwire must be worn for the next 3 months (day and night)
Possible immediate complications :
Hematoma : this risk can be reduced by maintaining the drainage system immediately after the surgery.
Infections: the antibiotics treatment must be strictly observed (starts one day before the surgery and continues after the surgery.
If, in spite of all the precautionary methods, there appear to be complications, surgical intervention might be necessary and will take place under general anesthesia. Sometimes a small skin necrosis can appear (1 cm) but it can heal by itself or by redoing the suture in order to speed up the recovery.
Possible long term complications :
Some patients can develop intolerance for the absorbable stitches. Unfortunately there are no tests to predict this. In such cases, the stitches become visible (they look like acne), but they will heal on their own (no intervention necessary).
It is recommended the patient avoid pregnancy for the next two years from the surgery.
Breastfeeding might be affected.
