Mammary Reconstruction

This procedure refers to the reconstruction of a "new" breast as a result of mastectomy. Depending on the type of tumor or/and the implications of the surgery, the reconstruction can take place either during the same operation as the mastectomy or after.

The mammary reconstruction is an option only after oncologic examination. The techniques of reconstruction will not be presented here, but, in very general terms, muscular flaps and mammary implants will be used for the reconstruction of a breast with a natural look. Often, this process involves a number of consultations and interventions which can take a few months. Sometimes, for a better symmetry of the two breasts, the other breast may need to be reshaped.

These interventions are quite complicated and must take place under general anesthesia. The hospital stay can take up to 1 week for each intervention. The possible complications are case specific and will be discussed during consultations.
