Face lifting
Facial lifting redistributes the tegument and the fat deposits around the face. The main goal is to remove the wrinkles and creases around the mouth and nose and the age related damages. Generally, with such an intervention one can look 10 years younger. Depending on the age of the patient and the cosmetic treatments the patient undergoes after the surgery, the results can be even better. There is no expiration date with such interventions. For example a patient who is 40 years old and undergoes the surgery, can look 30 and at the age of 50 she/he will look 40. This type of estimation works only for those patients whose face-lift is done on two layers: skin and SMAS (the Musculo-Fatty Layer of the Face) - from the eyebrows to the neck level.
The face-lift done in one layer only (skin level) is less effective and it is highly dependent on the quality of the patient's skin.
The lift in one layer (skin level) at the eyebrow and cheek bone level (also called mini-lifting) has good results but they are short term (below 2 years).
The optimal theoretical age for the first face-lift is 40. During the intervention, the following operations can be performed based on the decisions the patient and the surgeon made prior to the surgery: the shape of the eyes can be changed, the excess skin and/or fat of the eyelids can be removed, and the cheeck bones can be accented, the lower jaw line can be defined, the skin of the neck can be stretched, a face/neck liposuction can be made to correct a double chin or sagging chin.
The scar will be a hidden subtle line in front of the ear. The rest of the scars will be hidden in the areas covered by hair.
The surgery will take between 3-5 hours depending on the techniques involved. After the surgery two drainage systems will be installed and a compressive bandage will be applied.
Depending on each patient the hospital stay will be between 1-3 days.
The morning after the surgery the dressing is changed and the drainage system removed. An IV for antibiotics and pain medication will be worn throughout the hospital stay.
The swelling and bruising around the eyes are rather a reason for discomfort than complications and they can appear a few days after the surgery. They are not a reason for concern and they will disappear soon.
Hematoma will be reduced by the compressive bandage and the drainage system.
Infections: the treatment with antibiotics must be strictly observed (starts before the surgery and continues 3-5 days after the surgery).
If, in spite of all the precautionary methods, there appear to be complications, there can be another surgical intervention.
After being released from the hospital, the patient will wear an elastic garment for 7-10 days during the night. This can help and speed up the healing process. After 72 hours from the surgery the patient can wash her/his hair under the doctor's supervision and also start her/his social life (while wearing some little concealed bandages around their ears. The stitches are removed 9 days after the surgery, during which time the dressings will be changed 1-2 times. To enhance the results of the face-lift, one can complement it with a botox treatment for removing the wrinkles on the forehead, blepharoplasty (removing excess skin from the eyelids), peeling of the lower eyelids, and/or chemical facial treatments.
