Rhinoplasty
It improves the appearance and proportion of your nose, enhancing facial harmony and self confidence. Surgery of the nose may also correct impaired breathing caused by structural abnormalities in the nose. This can be one or a combination of the following:
- Removing the hump on the dorsum of the nose
- Reshaping the tip of the nose
- Reshaping of the nostrils
- Correcting the asymmetry of the nose
- Enhancing or deemphasizing the nose
Most often the incisions are done inside the nostrils so that no scars will be visible on the outside. In special cases, small incisions must be done on the outside of the nose, so that the scar will take few weeks to disappear.
The surgery takes 1.5 hours and is done under general anesthesia. After the surgery, the patient will wear a hard plastic mask over the nose and gauzes into the nostrils to maintain the shape and favor the healing.
The hospital stay is between 1-2 days.
During the first 3 days after the surgery the patient must rest in bed and eat semi-solid foods to prevent bleeding and excessive nose movement.
Possible complications after the surgery :
The swelling and the bruising may extend to the eyes and all areas of the face. Common post-surgery instructions include a cold compress immediately after the surgery to reduce swelling, pain medication to reduce discomfort, and elevating your pillow for the first few days. They are not a reason for concern and they will disappear within 7-9 days after the surgery.
The swelling around the nose will last 10-14 days. Some puffiness around the nose will last up around 3 months.
It is normal to have a little bleeding during the first day after the surgery. The compressive dressing of the nostrils and the haemostatic medication administered after the surgery control effectively the bleeding.
To prevent the movement of the nasal bony framework within the first 9 days after the surgery, the hard plastic mask is worn permanently. The patient must avoid high impact activities and solid foods; otherwise a repositioning of the nose might be necessary.
There is very law risk for infection. The antibiotic treatment started before the surgery will control possible infections.
Hematoma: the compressive dressing and the haemostatic medication prevent it.
In case of complications, the patient needs to be brought back into the operating room.
The patient is discharged from the hospital the next day and he/she needs to wear the mask and follow the prescribed treatment.
Patient will come for a check-up 4 days after the surgery to remove the gauzes inside the nostrils. The patient will resume breathing through her/his nostrils right away. The patient must not introduce any objects into the nose to scratch since it can cause bleeding or the opening of the incision. 9 days after the surgery, the stitches and the plastic mask will be removed. Starting now, the patient can start spraying/washing the inside of the nose with sterile saline water (from the pharmacy). The patient must be gentle when blowing the nose and must not remove the crusts with anything other than during the nasal washings. After the 9 th day the patient can resume her/his social life. The swelling will disappear completely during the next 3 months and the final results will be complete.
